We have grown immensely since our first issue back in , and we are overjoyed to continue supporting the families of Luxembourg and beyond.
As a mother of two young children, I have been in the perplexing position of choosing the perfect school for my family and know how difficult it can be. I am proud of the service this magazine has provided for the past two years, watching us reach more and more families with each issue.
There are many schools in Luxembourg which have a plethora of marvelous facilities, great multilingual education and out-of-this-world academics which can make the choice even more daunting. Our guide is here to help you figure out what will work best for you. City Savvy Luxembourg began as a digital magazine dedicated to the expats of Luxembourg who crave content presented in English. I am filled with excitement as I watch our company expand its offer each and every day thanks to our tight-knit and dynamic team.
Education is not the only topic that City Savvy Luxembourg covers. Want to find the best place to go for a Sunday brunch? Or try the best coffee in Luxembourg? Our digital magazine is the place to go for all things entertaining, tasty and fun. The education sector is no different. One person who recognises that this is integral to the education system of the country is Claude Meisch. The Minister of Education grew up in Differdange and like many young Luxembourgers, started his career in a bank.
He started to become increasingly interested and involved in local politics, so it should come as no surprise that he then became the mayor of Differdange for 12 years. By , he had fully entered the government as the Minister of Education. In terms of what we can expect for the remainder of his term, he would like to see the latest education reform blossom and give schools the chance to implement the new legislation. His priority is to ensure that all the schools have the right resources in terms of financial and personnel to implement these reforms.
He explains Education really motivates me to work hard every day. Claude Meisch 8 Interview that due to the constantly changing society and population, there are more challenges and chances to become more diverse. During his time as Education Minister, Meisch introduced a childcare initiative which meant that children between the ages of 1 and 4 years were entitled to 20 hours of free childcare per week in every creche in the country.
For older children, language becomes one of the biggest concerns for families choosing a curriculum for their child. This mandatory legislation was well received by the public, and Meisch explains that a lot of foreigners understand that it is an important step of integration into the country. They are happy for their children to learn the language. Aside from language, there are other skills that Meisch strongly roots for.
T, so we have to develop their more human skills. For some, the path of education may not seem quite as straightforward. For those entering a school system with learning difficulties, it may seem unclear what the support will look like. The minister reassures the public that a great deal is being done to increase the competency of schools all over the country, so that most children with learning difficulties can remain in the mainstream system and be assisted in their existing schools amongst their peers.
He admits that this is not easy. Meisch, whose children go to the public international school in Differdange reveals the factors that played into his decision. Second of all, a lot of his friends decided to go there too. It seems strange at first that someone who has dedicated their career to the education of children would be laidback enough to allow their children to make their own decisions on where to study, but then he makes one final comment and it all makes sense.
The best school for each child is different based on the child. Whether the schools are private or public, in Luxembourg, we want to offer options so that each child can find the best school and curriculum that compliments them. This guide is for you! Luckily for you and your family, Luxembourg offers a wide variety of excellent schooling options to meet the language and educational requirements of this unique, multicultural population.
Thanks to the initiative of the Luxembourgish government recognizing the need for international schools, there are now many choices for those who are looking for English-language education. Choosing where to send your children to school is an important decision that will ultimately impact all areas of your family life while you remain in Luxembourg; having more than one child ramps up the complexity. To help you sort through your options, here are some topics to consider when choosing a school or the commune municipality where you hope to live.
Tim e How long do you plan to stay in Luxembourg? Could this be you in a few years? What languages do you speak with your family? What languages do you anticipate will be valuable to your child in the upcoming years? Do you want your kids to attend classes in their native language?
Which schools offer this? Luxembourg offers a wide variety of excellent schooling options to meet the language and educational requirements of this unique, multicultural population. Diploma Programme Which curriculum does the school follow? If there is the chance of future relocation outside of Luxembourg, it may benefit your child to transfer to a school with the same curriculum for continuity of studies.
Is there bus service available for the students free or paid? How far are you willing to commute to the school? Does your school of choice give enrollment preference for those who live closest to the school? What is the traffic like around the school at drop-off and pick-up times? If you have children in more than one school, are you able to get them to their various schools on-time considering work location and schedules?
After-school care Most schools in Luxembourg have options for care outside of school hours, in the form of SEA, Maison Relais or you could choose a private Foyer Scolaire. Does the school have an after-care service provider on site? What are their hours? Are you guaranteed a place or is there a waiting list?
Do they offer help with homework? Pedagogical Style Are you interested in a traditional educational approach or leaning towards alternatives such as Waldorf, Montessori or similar Eis Schoul , forest school or even homeschooling? The best source of information on the schools is often other parents. A good start is to connect with the parent support group Passage passage.
Your commune will have an office called the Mairie French or Gemengenhaus Luxembourgish , and the commune secretary or education department will assist you in the process of enrolling your child in school. When you register at the commune, your children of primary-school age will be automatically enrolled in your local school for the current or upcoming school year.
You may receive a notification by mail for your child in the Spring before the next school year, and possibly an invitation to an open day at the school. If you wish to register your child at a public school outside your commune, you have the right to request this from the commune of the school you are interested in. Whether they will accept your child depends upon the commune and whether there is space available.
If you arrive in Luxembourg with a child 12 years or older, after registering with your commune you may also go directly to the secondary school you are interested in for enrollment questions. CASNA will help determine the most suitable secondary school options for the newlyarrived students after evaluating their level of education and knowledge of the necessary languages. Care outside of School and Childcare Facilities A significant number of young children in Luxembourg approximately 50, attend a childcare facility or are looked after by a parental assistant.
Several types of childcare facilities exist to take care of your children before or after school, from early childhood until age 12 years. Registration is done directly with the service concerned, and the parents sign a contract with the childcare facility. Each and every child must be able to benefit from a quality range of educational activities in these six essential areas important for their overall development: 1.
Creativity, art and aesthetics 2. Language, communication and media 3. Movement, body awareness and health 4. Values, participation and democracy 5. Emotions and social relationships 6. They are also obliged to follow the official rules of health and safety, and if your child is ill you will need to make other arrangements for his or her care at home.
It is a good idea to discuss their pedagogical style when considering whether to place your child in their care. There will typically be a schedule for adapting the child to the new environment to ensure as tear-free a transition as possible. Day Nurseries Day nurseries operate for a maximum of 16 hours per week, and accept children from the age of 2 months to 8 years old.
Due to the short time frame, day nurseries are a good option when a parent is looking for a way to socialise a child. Many schools have a Maison Relais on-site. SEA staff work closely with the teachers of the school and often supervise field trips, outdoor playtime and lunch breaks in addition to welcoming early students and organising after-school activities.
Foyer de Jour Foyer de jour is after-school care for children between the ages of 4 and 12 years old. Not all schools offer their own after-school care, so there are private foyers de jour, some of which offer a transport system to pick up your child from school when it finishes. Lunch may be provided as well.
Foyers de jour commonly provide an afternoon snack, help with homework and take the children outside for sports and other activities. This is another good option for exposing your child to multiple languages. Maison Relais and SEA Launched in , Maison Relais was created in partnership with the municipal authorities and the Ministry of Family Affairs, with the goal that parents could work and children could be looked after by a wide range of flexible centres.
These centres look after children from the age of 3 up to 12 years old, and in some cases up to the age of The amount of CSA your family receives is income-based, and considers the number and position of children in your household and the hours spent in after-school care. Regardless of income, all children between 1 and 4 years of age are provided with 20 hours of free childcare under CSA. The CSA is available for all children living in Luxembourg; or whose parent or legal guardian at least one is a national of a Member State of the European Union and working in Luxembourg.
To receive the CSA, the child must be under 13 years of age and still be in primary school. For non-resident workers, further conditions apply: 1. They must be receiving the Luxembourg family allowance for the child for whom they are seeking the CSA. Be sure to renew your annual membership contract promptly before it expires to avoid paying full-cost for meals and childcare.
It can be tricky to get reimbursed after the fact and depends on if your service provider will recalculate your invoices for the month s you overpaid. When you renew your contact the new rates will automatically be applied to your invoices. City Savvy Luxembourg is here to help. The CSA is available for all children living in Luxembourg; or whose parent or legal guardian is an EU national and working in Luxembourg.
You want a place where she feels safe physically and emotionally , is excited about what she is learning, and feels challenged by the coursework. When looking at a school, consider the ways in which it fosters relationships and engages students in the learning process. Because when these two things are in place, students are more likely to take risks and persevere in the face of challenging coursework.
Relationships Students benefit from working with adults who know them well and who create an atmosphere of trust, so that students are willing to take greater risks as learners. Without the foundation of strong relationships between students and teachers, asking students to take on more challenging assignments can cause them to become frustrated and withdrawn. Schools create ways for teachers to know students better, allowing for relationships to grow naturally. Ideally, students can relate what they are studying to questions about their future, current issues in their personal lives, or something they have been wondering about.
Engaging students in making decisions about what and how they learn enhances their understanding, establishes a sense of belonging and fosters lifelong skills. Students are willing to take risks and try new skills or persevere even when they dislike the subject because they see an inherent value in what they are doing, either in terms of personal growth or in keeping up their grades.
It uses the diversity and culture of each student to build effective learning experiences. Look for evidence of classwork that gives students the opportunity to make decisions about their learning. Parents often think about rigor as the amount of coursework — highlighting the need to cover more academic content and focus more specifically on discipline and deep mastery of fundamental skills.
This notion persists in education generally because rigor defined as more content coverage is easily measured and predicted. Students must be prepared for a world that requires skills in reasoning, communication, problem solving, and collaboration.
The kind of classroom that builds these skills requires students to feel comfortable working with other people and to take on learning challenges that go beyond the traditional textbook. A school that fosters greater personalization and relevance is poised to meet the challenge of creating greater rigor. Of course, these can be important factors to consider. Catherine Wallach, PhD has worked with, researched, and written about schools for over twenty years.
The high immigration rate and strong presence of foreign nationals has had a significant effect on the development of the education system fun fact, there are nationalities living in Luxembourg. Luxembourg is a trilingual country. The national language is Luxembourgish, the legislative language is French, and the official administrative and judicial languages are French, German and Luxembourgish. Not surprisingly, the importance of languages is reflected in the education system.
In the local public schools, German is the main language of instruction in elementary school and in lower secondary education, but most subjects in higher secondary education are taught in French. As a result, Luxembourg has the highest rate of students who do not speak the language of instruction at home. It also has the highest number of foreign languages learned per student in the EU.
Luxembourgish schools have the task of giving equal educational opportunities to students with a diverse population regarding social background, native language, culture and individual learning levels and skills. This unique environment poses many challenges for students and educators alike, but thankfully these are being met with many new solutions, including the expansion of the public international schools with instruction in English, French, German and Portuguese as well as Luxembourgish.
For more information on this service please see www. The children are often grouped by age, with the younger babies separated from the toddlers for activities. In October , a multilingual education program overseen by a scientific committee was introduced as part of the Staark Kanner Strong Children initiative to help young children ages years develop their language skills. Experts agree that young children are able to learn several languages intuitively and naturally, and the exposure to multiple languages can have lifelong benefits.
They will also be encouraged to communicate in their native languages with the educators and other children. This program continues on in later years at the after-school care programs such as maison relais, foyers de jour and other non-formal education facilities.
Most children join the class at the start of the school year in September, but in some communes there is the option to join the class at the start of the 2nd or 3rd trimesters in January or April, depending on the age of the child and the space available.
Although, of course the staff members will provide assistance to children as needed during the preschool years. The children will learn additional skills necessary to become more independent, and enjoy a wide variety of arts, crafts, activities and outings. A new requirement has recently been added to introduce French and various mother-tongues of the children in Cycle 1 to expose the children to multiple languages. In cycle 1. In exceptional circumstances, a child may be offered the option to add an additional year of preschool or skip forward a year in order to meet individual needs.
This starts with cycle 2. Registration typically takes place in April, but for new arrivals registration is possible at any time of year. Here is a breakdown of the years and associated ages at the start of the school year: Age 6 First year Cycle 2. At the end of each 2-year cycle or learning level there will be an assessment to certify that the child has acquired the skills to continue on to the next level. Primary school education provides children with the essential skills for future studies, laying the foundation in reading, writing, mathematics, sciences, natural science, humanities and history.
Art, music, play and sport continue to be important aspects of learning, but early emphasis is placed on the acquisition of languages. The aim of these intensive language courses is to provide students with the necessary comprehension of Luxembourgish, German or French to participate and succeed in their studies and integrate smoothly into the class level with peers their age.
As it is difficult for newly-arrived pupils over the age of 10 to achieve the level required in cycle 4 in both German and French, emphasis is placed on French for this age group. Integrated science, history and geography classes taught in Portuguese, as part of the school timetable, are available in some schools for students who come from Portuguese-speaking families.
There are also parallel classes provided by the Portuguese language education department of the Portuguese Embassy that occur outside of school hours. There are public primary schools in Luxembourg. Secondary education typically lasts either six or seven years, and is compulsory for all students until the age of 16 or 15 with an apprenticeship.
Each commune will allocate the students living in their catchment area to a public secondary school; however, the option to apply to schools outside your commune is available. The ultimate decision is a joint decision between the school and the teachers.
In case of disagreement, a guidance committee will make the decision. In the extraordinary circumstance that a student does not meet the necessary requirements to advance to his or her chosen secondary school path, there may be the possibility to repeat a year.
This educational path is directed at continued university studies. There is a shift in the 4th year 4 C and from that point on all courses except languages German, English, Latin will be taught in French. The new initiatives to introduce the French language in primary school extend into the lower classes of secondary education.
In both divisions lower and upper the students will be routinely assessed and will receive an end-of-year report specifying if they have attained the results necessary to continue to the next level. There is no examination at the end of the year. Detailed information on the structure and focus of studies for the classic secondary education levels and years can be found at www.
There will be the possibility of advancement into university or higher education institutions for specialised programs. General secondary education years are also numbered in descending order. Students start secondary school in the 7th year 7 G and the length they remain varies on the course of study. The years are divided into 2 levels or divisions lower and upper. Courses are taught in German instead of French in the lower division. Admittance to the 4th year is decided by the class board.
Information about filing an appeal can be found at www. The IB is an internationally-recognized diploma; as of September , there are 6, programmes being offered worldwide, across 5, schools in countries. The IB is accepted as an entrance requirement for most universities. The IB programme is a good option for students who are capable of handling a challenging curriculum and who have native or excellent command of English or French and wish to pursue studies in one of these languages.
The years are divided into 2 levels or divisions lower and upper , and the years countdown from 7 to 1 with these typical ages at the start of the school year: Age 12 7th year Age 13 6th year Age 14 5th year Age 15 4th year Age 16 3rd year Age 17 2nd year Age 18 1st year Lower division Upper division To earn an IB diploma, students must take and pass examinations in the six aforementioned academic subjects, as prescribed by the IB the organization formerly known as the IBO.
Today there are thirteen European Schools in six EU member states Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Spain that function as a network of privateauthority schools that share a common curriculum and common extracurricular activities and events. The pedagogical approach for all levels of education from preschool to primary to secondary school places emphasis on multicultural and multilingual learning.
As the curriculum is the same in all schools, it allows students transferring from one European School to another to continue their studies without disruption. Secondary school lasts seven years. Final examinations occur at the end of year 7, including examinations in the required second language necessary for completion of the EB diploma.
This European Baccalaureate diploma is accepted for entrance into university in all countries of the European Union and in some other countries. Additional public international schools are being planned, including a state-run international school in Luxembourg city. For secondary school students planning to continue university studies in the UK, A level examination results may be helpful in gaining admittance. A level examinations are highly specialized, and are typically taken after 13 years of schooling.

The MyCard is a card issued by the Ministry of Education to every student in a Luxembourgish secondary school. It can be charged with money via credit card or Digicash.
Chirac, While this quote by former President of France Jacques Chirac paints an apocalyptic picture, we need to acknowledge that we are faced with the destruction of nature threatening the existence of our planet and the survival of the human species. Accelerating research by working together towards a common objective is one solution, and recent history has shown the importance of young people and their contribution within this process.
There is a need to support the future generation of scientists — now more than ever — with the development of new tools and innovative technologies for the sustainable management of our natural resources. They can exhibit their own scientific projects, participate in cultural exchanges and win prestigious awards. In Luxembourg became the third country in Europe to organise a national science competition, calling young people to undertake a personal project in science and technology.
Ever since, the FJSL annually organises the national Jonk Fuerscher competition, involving young people in scientific activities and competitions. It cooperates at both the national and international level with other organisations who have similar purposes. Since , the Foundation has had a sponsorship contract with the Fonds National de la Recherche, and is continuously supported by the Ministry of National Education, all while fostering collaborations with the Service national de la Jeunesse, amongst others.
This allows them to learn about themselves and others. After having had the honour of organising the national Jonk Fuerscher competition two consecutive years in and , and consequently having accompanied our young scientists to the biggest international competitions, I am convinced that our platforms are proving to be beneficial in the training of socially competent, responsible, and selfdetermined individuals, who will become allies that contribute to a future based on humanity and knowledge.
These activities encourage the participants to attempt to master the difficulties of research by working on the concrete project, and tackle self-driven goals. A jury of professionals and scientists evaluates the projects according to specific criteria such as age of the participants, number of people in a group, field of the project, overall complexity and extent of research, etc. The awards allocated are in general science-related experiences, such as workshops at renowned schools, the participation in prestigious international science and technology contests or international forums and expos where the participants represent their projects and the Grand-Duchy as ambassadors.
Every year, tens of millions of students participate in science fairs around the globe. The international partner fairs are invited to send laureates from their contests to attend the Expo-Science Luxembourg, where their teams can present their projects in a non-competitive setting alongside the local young scientists, encouraging intercultural exchange. I got to many people from all over the world, who are interested in the same areas of science as I am. I feel like this was one of the most important trips of my young science career because it formed me as an individual and opened up hundreds of opportunities for me.
While it is still expanding its network, the contest and the possibilities it offers, have immensely evolved over the last few years. To end this article on an optimistic tone: it is initiatives like these that encourage the out-of-the-box thinking that we need for our generations to survive and thrive in the digital era. What a wonderfully complex time to be a young scientist! The programme itself is delivered through a practical and professional approach to truly prepare our students for the real world.
Our top-tier lecturers are working professionals and industry experts who bring precious additional experience, insights and passion to our students. Small class size, open-class discussions and tutoring allow for a close-knit community of students, faculty and alumni.
UBI also works with external consultants and industry experts to provide workshops, seminars and corporate events to introduce our students to topics which extend the curriculum beyond that which is taught in lectures. The school further designs special immersion programmes for students to experience global business affairs first hand. UnitedBusinessInstitutes Your first step is to define yourself.
Your destiny is to re-define the world. Alternative education is a rapidlygrowing trend worldwide. The concept of alternative schooling encompasses a variety of pedagogical approaches and can be incorporated into state schools, private schools and home-based learning programs.
Many educational alternatives emphasize small class sizes, close relationships between students and teachers and a sense of community. The focus is to encourage the student to learn in a manner that suits his or her individual needs, abilities and interests. These are some of the schools in Luxembourg that offer an alternative education methodology: as in extra-curricular supervision. All children are accepted in their diversity, and learn — each at their own pace — to become autonomous, responsible, able to interact with others and to assert their opinion while respecting that of others.
Education Minister Meisch announced in that additional cross-border schools will be created in the near future. National Centre for Continuous Vocational Training - CNFPC Centre national de formation professionnelle continue Offers vocational guidance and professional initiation courses for youths aged 15 to 17 who are ineligible for the lower cycle of general formerly known as technical secondary education, and who have been unsuccessful in finding an apprenticeship position, or have left school before obtaining their diploma.
Eis Schoul Eis Schoul is a public school with the mission of developing new forms of learning and teaching, and operates according to the principles of inclusive pedagogy. Rather than forcing everyone to study the same subjects, they encourage individual decisions about dedicating themselves to specific subjects of personal interest. It accepts students who practise sports at a high level. Applications for admission are submitted through the national federation for the sport practised by the applicant.
Using nature as their classroom, forest schools are leading a global movement to connect children with the world around them. There are a few schools in Luxembourg specifically incorporating nature and time spent outdoors into their daily schedule. Montessori Education Montessori schools serve children from birth to 18 years of age. Children should move freely within a Montessori classroom, selecting work that captures their interest. Every small child is responsible for their own environment.
Children are encouraged to learn and experience on their own. The Montessori Method goes from the concrete to the abstract, which means that many concrete materials are used during the early school years, but the goal is for students to be able to think abstractly. Montessori Curriculum The Montessori approach is interdisciplinary, as subjects are woven together. One of the most important tools in Montessori education is working with specialised educational materials, which are selected for each group.
Students learn concepts from working with these materials, rather than by direct instruction. Waldorf Education Waldorf education is based on the pedagogical philosophy of its founder, Rudolf Steiner. Learning is interdisciplinary, integrating practical, artistic, and conceptual elements. The approach emphasizes the role of imagination in learning.
Another important concept is the three-fold nature of the human being in which body, soul, and spirit are taken into consideration. The Waldorf curriculum is broad and comprehensive, structured to respond to the three developmental phases of childhood: from birth to approximately 6 or 7 years, from 7 to 14 years and from 14 to 18 years. Schools and teachers are given considerable freedom to define curricula within collegial structures.
The Waldorf School of Luxembourg is situated in Limpertsberg. The language of instruction in preschool is Luxembourgish German in Primary school, with English and French introduced early. French is the main language in secondary school and for the IB Diploma. Homeschooling Homeschooling is one alternative to the traditional education system in Luxembourg. Homeschooling children ages years old is a possibility, if requested before the beginning of a school year.
Authorization is necessary from your regional primary school director www. When your child is older than 12 years, you will need to provide your commune or the Ministry of Education with proof that your child is following a correspondence course.
Schooling is mandatory until the age of If desired, it is possible to follow a curriculum other than the Luxembourgish school curriculum, if you provide valid reasons and you receive approval by the regional director. It is important to note that homeschooling still needs to provide the children with the ability to acquire fundamental skills, and to pass inspection by the school district director.
In order to protect the best interests of the child, if the child is not meeting these learning goals, the approval to homeschool can be withdrawn.
